The challenge
Implementing new technology into online courses can present high learning curves for both faculty and students. Instructional designers Heidi Schroeder and Dr. Joy Wu from George Washington University increased learner engagement in 19 unique nursing courses via interactive video.
The solution
PlayPosit by WeVideo gave George Washington University an interactive video platform to develop meaningful learning activities that incorporate research-based best practices via instructional design, curriculum mapping, and faculty development. Professors used PlayPosit to:
- Implement dynamic course creation: Heidi and Dr. Wu use interactive video to target synchronous undergraduate students, asynchronous graduate students, PhD students, and adult learners with lived clinical nursing experience.
- Create interactive video questions: Heidi and Dr. Wu highlight an interactive video that orients students to tricky assignments, elicits prior knowledge, and foreshadows effective follow-up questions.
- Empower learners to create content: Heidi and Dr. Wu use interactive video to encourage student interaction, feedback, and follow-up reflections on lecture content.
As the nursing profession moves towards competency-based education, PlayPosit's ease of use and impact on learning was imperative for George Washington University.
The results
At the end of every Bulb (interactive video), students rated the statement, “The interactive questions in this lecture enhanced my learning” based on their level of agreement. Using a five-point Likert scale, and among 372 students, they ranked the following:
- 82% either strongly agreed or agreed with the statement
- 88% of strictly graduate students strongly agreed or agreed with the statement
- 78% of strictly undergraduate students strongly agreed or agreed with the statement
Heidi and Dr. Wu note that enhanced leadership and mentorship among faculty was a neat byproduct of using interactive video.
Key takeaways
Using PlayPosit by WeVideo has shown:
- Enhanced Learning: Interactive video increases student interaction and creativity.
- Effective Assessment: Validates PlayPosit as a helpful tool for formative and summative assessments.
- Higher Ed Potential: Promises for continued academic implementation.
For BSN and PhD students to faculty and professional development, the use of interactive video proves invaluable on (and off) campus.

Benefits of interactive video
- Triple engagement: Interactive video proves the effectiveness of curricula through powerful analytics and measurable engagement tools, suitable for any learning style or environment.
- Offer flexible on-demand learning: Complete assignments from anywhere with interactions like multiple-choice, jumps, quizzes, and web embeds that ensure active participation.
- Differentiate instruction: Meet diverse learner needs with branched learning pathways, playlists, and interactive touch points.
Practical strategies for educators
- Design significant video questions: Tailor interactive video questions to comprehension levels and learner needs. Use strategic placements to foster consistent and active participation.
- Establish learning objectives: Cater assignments and interactions to specific learning objectives.
- Use data and student feedback for improvement: Implement surveys, polls, and data analytics to assess learner engagement. Identify gaps and remediate for future courses.
