Tackling story elements!

Looking for a fun way to tackle story elements? Consider having your students create book trailers that showcase their understanding of text! Students will synthesize, summarize and design in this learning experience. Plus, Cinderella is the perfect story to look at multiple cultural versions as included in the CCSS ELA Standards. The kids are sure to love searching for licensed images, working collaboratively and video editing!

Suggested Steps
Preparation
  • Collect different Cinderella story texts.
  • Review Story Elements (see standards as a guide),
  • Group students.
  • Assign each group a Cinderella story version.
  • Create a graphic organizer for students to record their thinking on.
  • Introduce the project, expectations, rubric, etc.
Creation
  • Students, in groups, read their assigned text.
  • Students fill out the graphic organizer.
  • Find images/symbols that synthesize their thinking on a licensed images platform. Save to Google Drive.
  • Use WeVideo to create video.

Reflection
  • Give students opportunities to reflect
    • Self Reflect- fill out a rubric or checklist, answer questions

    • Create Venn Diagrams

Group students in a way to best meet needs, utilize anchor charts from prior instruction for students, model for synthesizing information into a single image/symbol for the video, show sample book trailers


Reflection and assessment

Self reflection would be great! Peer feedback could definitely be incorporated.

To hit another standard, have students watch all the videos based on the different versions and then compare and contrast the stories (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.9: Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.)

Have students create the rubric BEFORE starting the project! Use this rubric to assess at the end.
