The challenge
In 2023, Indiana University rolled out a new strategic plan with a goal to increase online engagement in academic programs by 2030, which included career-aligned certificates and micro-credentials. Daniel Janicki, instructional technologist at Indiana University, was tasked with building “programs of scale” that would boost the attraction, enrollment, service, and graduation of more students. Additionally, courses needed to be eight weeks long, fully asynchronous, and have the ability to get high enrollment.
The solution
First, Janicki built a video production workflow to help streamline the production of new course content. Once a direction and outline was solidified and the content was recorded,
PlayPosit by WeVideo played a pivotal role in:
- Editing the videos with interactive elements
- Uploading the interactive videos to Canvas
- Empowering collaboration with the course professors
The results
Using PlayPosit with Canvas made it possible to:
- Create asynchronous content that was still truly interactive
- Share high-fidelity courses with all the interactive elements in tact
- Stay FERPA compliant with intentional faculty and educator roles
Key takeaways
Not only has Indiana University been able to scale content production, but it has also made it easier for instructors to share resources and create additional courses from past content.
Hear their story
During the PlayPosit Exchange, Janicki shared his institution’s success story with PlayPosit. He also took the time to walk his contemporaries through the sharing settings and methods for Canvas that helped them scale. He even covered tips to help institutions stay FERPA compliant. Benefits of interactive video
- Allows learners to move at their own pace and incorporate their classes into busy schedules.
- Encompasses a wide range of interaction tools to accommodate professors’ educational goals.
- Integrates with elearning platforms like Canvas (full list).
Practical strategies for educators
- Partner with instructors and build scripts/outlines alongside less experienced instructors.
- Take the time to do a test run of the content before making it live for students in Canvas.
- Tag videos to make it easier to find and reuse them in the future.
